Friendly guidelines to help everyone have a great experience at TCUC jams.
1. Tune Your Instrument
Make sure your ukulele is in tune before the jam starts. Even a cheap tuner will do the trick.
2. Be Considerate
Keep talking and noodling to a minimum while songs are being introduced. Leaders and other jammers need to be heard.
3. Lead Clearly
If you’re leading a song, play and sing loudly enough for everyone to follow. Use your “outdoor voice” if needed!
4. Stick to the Music Type
Follow the type of music listed on the [All Jams Calendar] for each session.
5. Try New Songs
Don’t be afraid to suggest or play songs that are new to you. New material keeps jams fresh and fun.
6. Share the Song Selection
Pass the next song choice around the circle so everyone gets a turn.
7. Keep It Simple
Use easy chords and playable tempos so all skill levels can join in. Simple songs also give more experienced jammers a chance to try new techniques.
8. Learn the Nashville Numbering System*
Using numbers to call chords makes songs easy to play in any key. It helps leaders quickly communicate chord changes so everyone can follow along.
9. Follow the Rhythm
Keep a steady tempo and listen to the song leader. If you miss a beat, play quietly and get back in.
10. Celebrate Each Other
Encourage and support all jammers, no matter skill level. We’re here to play, sing, and enjoy music together.
* Nashville Numbering System (NNS): Chords are represented by numbers instead of letters, based on the key of the song. For example, in the key of C, 1 = C, 4 = F, 5 = G. This allows songs to be easily transposed to a key that works for the singer and keeps everyone on the same page.
